Mathematics

Explicit instruction is a key feature of Mathematics. Educators strategically model new concepts and skills, breaking learning into manageable steps, and explain mathematical thinking aloud. Frequent checks for understanding are used to identify misconceptions early and to adjust instruction as needed. Children are provided with guided practice before moving to independent application, ensuring concepts are well understood.

Learning is further supported through the use of concrete materials, cooperative tasks, games and digital technologies, allowing children to explore and apply their understanding in different ways. Problem-solving strategies are explicitly taught using real-life contexts to support meaningful learning.

Mathematics supports and challenges children across all levels of ability. Targeted Numeracy Enhancement is provided for children who require additional support in developing number concepts. To ensure consistency across the school, the Mathematics Leader will share a Maths overview with all staff, outlining key focus areas and the implementation plan for the year.
